In the early 1990s, when Hong Kong was still under British colonial rule, some enterprising young women decided to start making and selling knockoff versions of the world's most popular luxury item: Coach handbags. The handbags were strikingly similar to the real thing, but they were much cheaper, and they quickly became a sensation on the city's streets. Some people loved them, thinking they were a great deal. Others were horrified by the thought of a bunch of Hong Kong women making a fortune by ripping off Coach's customers. But the knockoff bags were a hit, and the women who made them quickly became rich and famous. Today, many of the women who made those early knockoff bags are still alive and well, and they still make and sell their replicas of the world's most popular luxury item.
